Navigators Team Newsletter
August 28-September 1, 2017

  • Thank you for all of the snacks you contributed this week for the Eclipse and for the Native American unit.  We had a great week learning about and celebrating both.
  • We hope you will join us on Monday, August 28th for our Open House Night at 6:00 p.m.  We invite you to come to your child’s classrooms to learn about our classroom and hall procedures.  On this evening, we will also discuss Camp McDowell with our Navigator families. Information about INOW and Spring ACT Aspire Results will be available.
  • We will have a Camp McDowell meeting on Tuesday, September 5th at 6:00 in the BGIS Cafeteria. We will be answering many questions about the trip at this time.  Please see the ATTACHED LINK for information about paying for the trip. We want all children to be able to go.  A schedule of the camp is attached HERE.
  • Our biggest fundraiser of the year started this year.  Your child should have brought home a MAGAZINE sales packet.  Please sell those magazines and support BGIS!  Turn in days are on Wednesdays for the next 4 weeks. Prize days will be on Fridays during lunch.
  • Thursdays are Spirit Days at BGIS.  Wear a BGIS shirt or Hoover Bucs shirt to celebrate school spirit!  BGIS shirts are still available for purchase on www.myschoolfees.com.
  • Please remember that our hall is a NUT-FREE HALL!!!  We have several serious nut allergies on our hall. Due to this, we ask students to not bring any nut products for snack or lunch.  If peanut butter is brought for lunch, we will have to ask your child to go to the health room with a friend to eat their lunch.  This would need to be an occasional occurrence.  We thank you so much for your cooperation with this policy to keep all of our students safe!
  • Box Tops:  If you have any Box Tops, please send those in a baggie to help contribute to our classrooms!
  • If you have not completed the Google Form, please complete the form as soon as possible so that we can complete our distribution lists.  The link is found HERE.

  • FROM THE SCHOOL NURSE
Parents, Students are not allowed to carry medication on their person while at school.  Please make sure you contact the school nurse with any need for your child to have medication at school. A prescriber/parent authorization form must be presented to the nurse along with the medication before any student is allowed to have medication at school.  An adult needs to bring the medication along with the signed paperwork to the nurse. If you have any questions, please call Tyra Walker, RN at 439-1630

  • FROM THE COUNSELORS:  Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. Robichaux:
At Brock's Gap the school counseling services are addressed through the three major domains of the American School Counselor Association- Academic, Career, and Personal/Social. We're asking parents, teachers, and students to complete a short needs assessment in order to help us provide services through our counseling program. Thank you for your time and input.  We look forward to working and collaborating with you this year!

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
We had a great start to our year with reading this week.  We worked on setting routines and learned all about “Charles.”  Next week,  we will read a new passage throughout the week and focus on getting know the main characters.  The following week there will be a test over the vocabulary words and a reading test.  Students will have the vocabulary words in their binders to study and will be able to use the passage on their test.  It is very important that your child takes time to reread the passage at home during the week.
In Grammar, we are focusing on possessive nouns.  Students are expected to complete Language IXL by Thursday.  IXL is on the Weekly Grammar Sheet.  We will have a short quiz over the weekly grammar sheet on Thursday.

Math:
We are continuing to work with the students on the various Math routines that will stay consistent throughout the year such as number talks, weekly Cumulative Reviews, and problem solving.  We will continue work on our Unit 1 skills which focus on Place Value and Whole Number Operations. Next week, we will look at how the place value chart at length.  We know that this unit has been new material for some.   We promise that this will get SO much easier for them!  We will have a weekly quiz on Friday on Cumulative Review as well as place value work. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions!

Science:
We had such a wonderful day on Monday viewing the eclipse, and we could not be more proud of the students!  We are going to begin our Ecosystems unit next week.  This is such a fun unit, and the students learn a great deal.  We are in DESPERATE need of clear, clean 2 liter bottles.  We will be creating aquariums and terrariums with these for our units.  This is the highlight of our study as we grow plants from seeds, make aquariums with live fish, and terrariums with live crickets.  For two classes, we will need approximately 45 bottles. Clear (not green) Pepsi or Check product bottles are the easiest to use due to their rounder shape.  The clear bottles are better so the students can see the animals and observe changes.  We would like to begin this unit by next Wednesday so would so appreciate your donation!

Social Studies:
This week, we will prepare for a test on Thursday.  Study guides were sent home this week and are in your child’s binder.  All social studies assignments will be due on Thursday as well and will need to be completed and in order behind their Table of Contents.  This should be an easy grade as we update our Table of Contents together and they have had plenty of time to complete assignments.  Our next unit will be about explorers who first explored the Americas!

We hope you have a wonderful week!
