Curriculum News
Language Arts:
We will continue our Book Talks on Monday in Language Arts.  For the remainder of our short
week, we will be reviewing skills that we have worked on this year. There will be no IXL
and no tests or quizzes next week.


Math:
We have been working hard with fractions in our classes.  Students have worked on addition
and subtraction of fractions with unlike denominators and have added mixed numbers
with unlike denominators. We will work on subtracting mixed numbers with unlike
denominators when we return from the break.  We are proud of the efforts by the students!  
There will be no IXL and no tests or quizzes this week.


Science:
We have been studying the effects of an oil spill on an ecosystem, and we will continue this in
our classrooms when we return.  All students got to make a “Borax crystal” ornament.  They
will bring these home next week.

Social Studies:
We took our test on the American Revolution today.  When we get back in January, we will
learn more about the American Revolution.

Navigators Team Newsletter
December 11-15, 2017

  • WE HAVE TWO SPECIAL ADDITIONS TO OUR HALL!!!  John Edwin Powell was born on Wednesday, December 6th weighing 7 pounds 8 ounces.  Making a surprise and early arrival late this afternoon was Charlee Paige Sabbatini weighing 5 pounds 8 ounces.  We welcome Mrs. Stacia Berryhill who will be Mrs. Powell’s substitute.  We will welcome Mrs. Courtney Eads next Monday.  She has previous obligations until then.  We are so very thankful for two beautiful and healthy babies!!

  • The school-wide Spelling Bee will be on Friday, December 15th.   The winner from our hallway will compete in the school-wide bee.  A list of practice words have been shared with your child on their Language Arts Google Classroom.

  • Our counselors are in need of career spotlight videos to show our students on Broadcast!  If you are interested, you can video yourself answering some or all of the following questions.  Please limit your video to 2 minutes.  E-mail your video to cbruno@hoover.k12.al.us or nrobichaux@hoover.k12.al.us and they will submit it to broadcast on BGIS news.

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
We have started reading our books for our Book Talks.  Book Talks will take place on Friday, December 15th; Monday, December 18th; and Tuesday, December 19th. They may need to read their book at home depending on how far they get during the week.  They will be given time to work on their projects in class, but again, may need to work on them at home to prepare. *Each student needs to be prepared to present their Book Talks by Friday, December 15th. (Names will be drawn randomly.)  We will also be working on Greek and Latin Root Words this week.

Math:
This week we will continue Unit 3 on Adding and Subtracting Fractions.  We will continue to focus on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators using a model and creating equivalent fractions with like denominators.  We will also focus on adding and subtracting mixed numbers.  

We will have a quiz Monday on Cumulative Review as well as the fractions material we have covered so far.  This quiz was originally scheduled for Friday, so we will be making it up due to the weather day.

Science:
This week in Science, students will continue to explore the engineering design process by developing a plan to stop a simulated oil spill.  This is a culmination activity to our study of pollution in the environment.  The students will enjoy this activity so much! Please help us by making sure that your child has SCISSORS and a GLUE STICK for Science!

Social Studies:
Study guides were sent home this week to prepare for the test on Friday, December 15th. Remind your child to organize their assignments and study for the upcoming test!  When we get back in January, we will learn about the American Revolution.

  • The BUCs Club will be collecting toys for YWCA of Central Alabama in the front lobby Monday, Nov. 27-Thursday, Dec. 7.  This is a special community service project because our students will not only be collecting toys but helping distribute them at the YWCA for families in need. Please see THIS LINK for more information.  Please consider donating to this special cause!

  • The school-wide Spelling Bee will be on Friday, December 15th.  Students will participate in a class Spelling Bee in their Language Arts Classes.  The winners of all four classes on our hallway will have a hallway bee before December 9th.  The winner from our hallway will compete in the school-wide bee.  A list of practice words have been shared with your child on their Language Arts Google Classroom.

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
Next week, in Language Arts, we will assess the students on writing nonfiction summaries, which we have learned about all this week.  We will also be completing a comprehension assessment during the week.  This will be an assessment over skills we have discussed this semester.  These give us great feedback as to how the students are meeting the standards and help us to continue to plan our curriculum.
We are going to be sending home an in-class project about Book Talks on Monday.   Starting next week, your child will be selecting a book to read in class over the next two weeks.  They will be given an assortment of projects to complete regarding their book.  Book Talks will take place on Friday, December 15th and Monday, December 18th.


Math:
We have began Unit 3 on Adding and Subtracting Fractions.  We have spent some time reviewing comparing fractions to a benchmark and equivalent fractions.  This week, we will continue to focus on adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators using a model and creating equivalent fractions with like denominators.


We will have a Cumulative Review for homework this week.  We will also have a quiz on Friday on Cumulative Review and the fractions material we have covered so far.


Science:
