UNITY DAY: Together against bullying. United for kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Wednesday, October 25, 2017
Make it ORANGE and make it end!. That’s the day everyone can come together – in schools, communities, and online – and send one large ORANGE message of support, hope, and unity to show that we are together against bullying and united for kindness, acceptance and inclusion.                            Wear Orange: Make a statement!
ORANGE provides a powerful, visually compelling expression of solidarity,” said Paula Goldberg, Executive Director of PACER Center. “When hundreds of individuals in a school or organization wear orange, the vibrant statement becomes a conversation starter, sending the unified message to kids to know that they are not alone.”  “More than one of every five school-aged children report being bullied,” said Julie Hertzog, director of PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center, which sponsors Unity Day and founded National Bullying Prevention Month in 2006. “It’s important these students know they are not alone and that they have the right to feel safe. By joining together and wearing ORANGE on Unity Day, we can send the unified message that we care about student’s physical and emotional health and that bullying will no longer be accepted in this society.”

We are asking that you video yourself answering a few questions and the video will be shared in our broadcast announcements.
We are looking for a variety of people interested in telling our students about their career. Many of our students are unaware of the career opportunities available to them and this is a fantastic way to provide them with first hand knowledge of potential career paths. This is also a great way for you to get involved in BGIS and make an impact on the students’ futures.
If you are interested in recording a short 2 minute video telling the students about a “day in the life” of your job, please complete the following link. http://bit.ly/2vDNqdu

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
Your child received or will soon receive their “Cold-Read Assessment” grade this week.  Cold reads are assessments that we give periodically throughout the year to determine if students are mastering objectives and reading on grade level.  The text is at a 5th grade level and questions focus on previously taught objectives.  These cold reads prove to be challenging for students, but it allows us to determine if your child has mastered the skills on a grade level text.  This test is only a small part of your child's grade, so with hard work on classroom assignments and homework, strong grades are able to be maintained.
We have focused on Narrative Writing this week and have worked hard to write a 5-paragraph essay.  Next week, we will spend time editing and publishing our pieces.

Math:
This week in Math, we will begin our study of division. Students will be working on estimating quotients as well as using the partial quotients algorithm to solve division problems.  The traditional long division algorithm will be part of our classroom discussions, but the 5th grade standard is partial quotients.  Notes will be sent home that detail this strategy.  We will have a Cumulative Review and IXL contract next week, but there will be no quizzes.  We will be having our Unit 1 Test (place value, order of operations, multiplication, and division) on Friday, October 20th.  A Study Guide will be sent home with your child to review for this.

Science:
This week, we spent time creating slides about our trip to Camp McDowell.  Those students that did not attend did vocabulary slides.  These will be graded and are due on October 10th.  Next week, our ecocolumns will be joined.  We will be researching food chains, food webs, and photosynthesis.  Please check your child’s agenda for important dates.

Social Studies:
Don’t forget about the Explorers’ project that is due on Tuesday, October 10th.  Students will present their projects to the class.   Here are the requirements.  We will begin our next unit the following week about the 13 colonies, which will lead us into the American Revolution.

We hope you have a wonderful week!
