  • FROM THE COUNSELORS:  Mrs. Bruno and Mrs. Robichaux:
  • September is Attendance Awareness Month.  Here is an English and Spanish version of the flyer!
At Brock's Gap the school counseling services are addressed through the three major domains of the American School Counselor Association- Academic, Career, and Personal/Social. We're asking parents, teachers, and students to complete a short needs assessment in order to help us provide services through our counseling program. Thank you for your time and input.  We look forward to working and collaborating with you this year!

  • This year at Brock’s Gap Intermediate School we are going to be doing career spotlights throughout the year. WE NEED YOU! We want our parents to be our spotlights. We are asking that you video yourself answering a few questions and the video will be shared in our broadcast announcements.
We are looking for a variety of people interested in telling our students about their career. Many of our students are unaware of the career opportunities available to them and this is a fantastic way to provide them with first hand knowledge of potential career paths. This is also a great way for you to get involved in BGIS and make an impact on the students’ futures.
If you are interested in recording a short 2 minute video telling the students about a “day in the life” of your job, please complete the following link. http://bit.ly/2vDNqdu
Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions. The information is also on the Guidance & Counseling page on the Brock’s Gap website.

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
We finished our character study this week with our fiction passages.  We began working on writing summaries this week and will wrap that up on Monday.  On Tuesday, students will take their first “Cold-Read Assessment.”  This means we will assess students on the skills we have worked hard on throughout our first unit.  Students will read a passage they have never read before and will answer questions about the passage.  We are looking for mastery of the skills they have learned, thus far.  When we get back from camp, we will have a week-long study of Narrative Writing and then switch to Non-fiction texts.

Math:
This week will be a short week in Math due to our Camp McDowell field trip.  We will be reviewing how to solve multiplication problems using two main strategies:  the Area Model and the US Traditional Algorithm.  Students will also continue to practice getting a magnitude estimate before solving multi-digit multiplication problems.  We will not have a Cumulative Review for homework this week.  We will also not have any tests or quizzes.

Science:
We have been continuing our unit on Ecosystems.  The students have begun building their group eco-columns that are made up of an aquarium and a terrarium.  This is an exciting unit for students!  They will get to work with living creatures, become investigative experimenters, and draw parallels between the events occurring inside their model eco-columns and those that occur every day all over the world.  We will continue our look at ecosystems next week!

Social Studies:
We are learning about European explorers who explored the Americas.  Don’t forget about the Explorers’ project.   Here are the requirements.   It will be due on Tuesday, October 10th.  A test is coming up as well.  Students have been given their study guides and can begin filling them out.    Continue to reinforce staying organized!

We hope you have a wonderful week!
