  • From Nurse Tyra Walker in the Health Room:
Parents Upcoming scoliosis screening for ALL students:

In accordance with Alabama law, Section 16-29-1, Code Alabama, 1975, our school will be conducting a free screening to detect adolescent scoliosis on November 29, 2017.

The school nurse will conduct the scoliosis screening along with a nurse from Children's Hospital from the scoliosis clinic..  The screening, which takes about one minute, is simple and not embarrassing.  It involves a visual examination of the back while standing straight and bending over.  Boys and girls will be screened separately.

Scoliosis is a twisting, or curve of the spine which occurs in about 10% of the adolescent population and about 2 ½% will require some type of medical attention.  The first sign of scoliosis is usually noticed between the ages of ten and fourteen.  If any symptoms are detected for your child, you will be notified by letter.

Please make sure your child wears a slip-on shirt or blouse on the screening day.  Girls may wear a bathing suit top or bra which will remain on during the screening.

If you do not want your child screened, please send a letter to the school nurse, Tyra Walker, RN.

Curriculum News
Language Arts:
In Language Arts, we will focus on summaries of non-fiction texts.
We will also complete another cold-read assessment during the week.  Cold-read assessments give us great feedback as to how the students are meeting the standards and help us to continue to plan our curriculum.

Math:
We will begin our study of fractions when we return from our Thanksgiving break.  Students took their Volume Unit Test this week, and we are so pleased with the learning that took place!  Students will add and subtract fractions and mixed numbers with like and unlike denominators in the next unit.  We will have an IXL Contract as well as a Cumulative Review the week when we return.  However, there will be no tests or quizzes.

Science:
When we return from Thanksgiving, students will be exploring the engineering and design process by developing a plan to stop a simulated oil spill.  This is a culmination activity to our study of pollution in the environment.  The students will enjoy this activity so much! Please help us by making sure that your child has SCISSORS and a GLUE STICK for Science!

Social Studies:
We will begin learning about the Causes of the American Revolution when we get back from our break.  We hope to finish this unit before school dismisses in December.

We hope you have a wonderful week!

  • We will collect supplies for homeless veterans in the lobby from November 1st-17th.  The people who work with the homeless veterans at the VA were totally overwhelmed with our large donation of items.  They cannot use federal money for these items and depend on donations.  Please encourage your students to participate in this worthy cause.

  • Our next spirit night is Tuesday, November 14th, at the Patton Creek Firehouse Subs from 4-8 p.m.  This is owned and operated by one of our very own Brock’s Gap families so it’s the perfect partnership!  It was extremely successful for us last year so we are excited to partner with them again!  We’d love your support and encouragement for participation!  Please see THIS FLYER for more information.

  • On Thursday, November 16th, we will be having a special Navigators team event.  We will ask all children to bring in their favorite family recipes to share with our hall as a culmination of a Language Arts unit that we are doing!  These will need to be cooked with no nut products.  While it is not mandatory that you participate, we do like for as many students to participate as we can!  When you have determined what you would like to send, please go to THIS GOOGLE FORM to let us know.  We ask that all food items be sent in an 8 x 8 inch disposable pan.  We do not have a way to heat the items, so they will need to arrive hot.  Please send a disposable serving utensil as well.  This is such a fun day!  We look forward to it!  If you would like to come join us to help us serve, we will need you Thursday morning from 8:15-9:30.  Let your homeroom teacher know if you would like to come!
